TO SEE THE MOUNTAINS

Project Type: Office/Retail Complex
Date: Spring 2022
Organization: SCI-Arc
Tools: Twinmotion, Rhinoceros

The West Los Angeles site at the intersection of La Cienega, Jefferson, and National Boulevards and the Ballona Creek has the potential to redefine the urban conception of the West Side of Los Angeles, and perhaps the entire city. The studio project is to design both new towers, to define the visual and organizational relationships between the three and the area, to organize the ground plain that connects the 3 discrete buildings, and to fulfill the specific program requirements of each building. What stands out most on the site would be the two mountains: Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area and Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. The project aims to make the audience pay attention to the natural landscape which is normally neglected.

01. site analysis

What stands out most on the site would be the two mountains: Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area and Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. The office aims to make the audience pay attention to the natural landscape which is normally neglected.

03. unobstructed view

As one moves through the building, the mountains can be seen unobstructed.

02. design sequence

The design started with 4 cones that mimic one’s eyesight. The cones are carved out from the maximum builtable area of the site. Two sets of parallel structures are implemented to support the cone. The structure is then implemented in the rest of the design.

04. two major circulation floors

Two major circulation floors provide maximum movability.
